Kandy Quiet and homely, residents cluster around the economic hub that buzzes a bazaar atmosphere. Life moves sedately, though not with inactivity. Away from tourist trappings, Kandy is filled with hidden thrills. Passing the spice gardens, Pinnawela elephant orphanage, Mahaweli river and the famous Peradeniya Gardens - Lord Mountbatten's WWII headquarters - you arrive in Kandy, home to the Royal Palace and the sacred Temple of the Tooth (known as the Dalada Maligawa). The last King who transformed Kandy into a celestial city , designed the white stone parapet that runs on the north shore of the artificial Kandy Lake (called kiri muhuda, or milky sea). The cloud-like drift (called walakulu bemma) on the walls and wave-like swells (called diyareli bemma) thus appears to make Kandy, a city floating in the sky in the lake's reflection.

Sigiriya should have been named one of the Wonders of the World, long ago, and now there is a proposal to nameSri Lankan architectural tradition is well displayed at Sigiriya, the best preserved city centre in Asia from the first millennium, with its combination of buildings and gardens with their trees, pathways, water gardens, the fusion of symmetrical and asymmetrical elements, use of varying levels and of axial and radial planning. The Complex consists of the central rock, rising 200 meters above the surrounding plain, and the two rectangular precincts on the east (90 hectares) and the west (40 hectares), surrounded by two moats and three ramparts. The plan of the city is based on a precise square module. The layout extends outwards from co-ordinates at the centre of the palace complex at the summit, with the eastern and western axis directly aligned to it. The water garden, moats and ramparts are based on an ‘echo plan’ duplicating the layout and design on either side. This city still displays its skeletal layout and its significant features. 3 km from east to west and 1 km from north to south it displays the grandeur and complexity of urban-planning in 5th century Sri Lanka. it as the Eighth Wonder of the Ancient world. Better late than never!

Hunas Falls 20 miles from Kandy is the Hunasgiriya Peak and the beautiful waterfall which got its name from the peak( 3000 feet above sea level). Hunas Falls area is most picturesque and has an excellent climate with temperatures between 17° and 25° C. The Hunas Fall cascades down through lovely tea country and the water is trapped below in a lake, where trout is hatched for angling. Situated in the middle reaches is the Hunas Falls Hotel. It is in a tea and spice plantation, where most of the countries spices and also lemon grass are grown. Fascinating sunsets light up the whole range of mountains for miles around.

Down South Situated off the south east coast of India, Sri Lanka is an island of startling contrasts. Coral reefs and warm seas lead gently onto 1,000 miles of sandy beaches. Low lying coastal plains slope up into green hills covered with tea plantations, which rise into dramatic mountains, rocky gorges and crystal waterfalls. Add to this the mystery of an ancient civilisation, the remains of vast lakes, shrines, temples and monasteries and you will realise that Sri Lanka is quite unique. Formerly Ceylon, Sri Lanka has something to suit everyone, the markets and bazaars of Colombo, the picturesque hill town of Kandy where age-old customs are preserved and of course, the beaches - ideal for sun worshippers. The warm hospitality, fascinating culture and dramatic scenery make Sri Lanka a land like no other. From North to South it has a maximum length of 435 km (270 miles) and at its widest point it measures 225 km. (140 miles), giving it a land area of 65,600 sq.km. (25,000 sq.miles).
